  • Top Cruise Ship Innovations of Recent Years

The cruise industry has continuously evolved, with cutting-edge innovations that have transformed the onboard experience for guests. Here's a breakdown of the top cruise ship innovations introduced over the past few years, ranked from most impactful to least, including the ships and cruise lines where these features first debuted. 1. Starlink Internet Access – Royal Caribbean First Introduced On : Freedom of the Seas  (2022) Cruise Line : Royal Caribbean International Innovation : Starlink's satellite-based internet system offers unprecedented internet speeds at sea, revolutionizing how passengers stay connected. Whether for streaming content, video conferencing, or browsing, passengers can now experience land-like internet speeds while cruising. This innovation has made working remotely from a cruise ship possible, enhancing the overall experience for tech-savvy travelers who need or want to stay connected. Impact : Faster internet has significantly improved the guest experience, allowing for real-time social media updates, streaming entertainment, and even remote work from the middle of the ocean. 2. MedallionClass Technology and Ocean Medallion – Princess Cruises First Introduced On : Regal Princess  (2017) Cruise Line : Princess Cruises Innovation : The Ocean Medallion  is a wearable, coin-sized device that interacts with the ship's network, enabling the entire MedallionClass Technology  experience. Passengers can enjoy keyless entry to their staterooms, touchless payments, personalized service, on-demand ordering, and real-time location tracking for family members. It allows for a highly personalized and seamless cruise experience, making everything from dining to navigation more convenient. Impact : This technology has significantly enhanced the onboard experience by streamlining processes, reducing waiting times, and personalizing interactions with the crew. Guests can focus more on enjoying their vacation, while Princess Cruises can more effectively cater to their needs. 3. Sustainability with LNG-Powered Ships – MSC Cruises First Introduced On : MSC World Europa  (2022) Cruise Line : MSC Cruises Innovation : The shift towards sustainability in the cruise industry was marked by the introduction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)- powered ships. MSC World Europa, one of MSC's World-Class ships, was designed to reduce carbon emissions significantly compared to traditional cruise ships. LNG engines produce fewer greenhouse gases and are more energy-efficient, contributing to a greener future for cruising. Impact : Passengers can enjoy guilt-free cruising, knowing their travel has a reduced environmental impact. It positions MSC Cruises as a leader in sustainable cruising, appealing to environmentally conscious travelers. 4. Destination Elevators – Carnival Cruise Line First Introduced On : Carnival Horizon  (2018) Cruise Line : Carnival Cruise Line Innovation : Carnival introduced destination elevators on Carnival Horizon , an intelligent elevator dispatch system by Schindler Marine that reduces wait times by grouping passengers heading to similar floors. The system assigns an elevator to passengers based on their destination floor, minimizing the number of stops and improving traffic flow. While designed to optimize passenger movement and reduce wait times, it often confuses first-time cruise passengers. How to use : Passengers choose their destination before entering the elevator using touchscreen panels in the lobby. There are no buttons inside the elevators. Most systems use load sensors to prevent overcrowding and only stop when there's space. One person should input the destination for a group to avoid being assigned to different elevators. If the wrong floor is selected on the touchpad, passengers need to exit and reselect their destination. Impact : This innovation has improved the overall efficiency of moving passengers across decks, particularly on larger ships, ensuring that guests spend less time waiting and more time enjoying their cruise. 5. Virtual Balconies – Royal Caribbean First Introduced On : Quantum of the Seas  (2014) Cruise Line : Royal Caribbean International Innovation : Virtual balconies bring real-time, high-definition exterior views into interior cabins via floor-to-ceiling screens. These screens show live footage of the ocean and destinations, making inside cabins feel more spacious and connected to the outside world. This innovation enhances the experience for passengers who book interior staterooms but want the feel of a balcony without the higher price tag. Impact : Guests in interior cabins can enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean, enhancing their experience without the cost of an actual balcony. 6. Enhanced Cabin Bathrooms – Disney Cruise Line First Introduced On : Disney Wish  (2022) Cruise Line : Disney Cruise Line Innovation : Disney elevated the cruise experience by introducing luxurious, hotel-like bathrooms on its new Triton-class ships. Gone are the cramped, modular shower stalls; these bathrooms feature heated floors, glass-enclosed showers, and better lighting. These changes provide a more luxurious, comfortable experience for guests. Impact : The improved bathroom design makes cabins feel more like hotel rooms, providing comfort and a higher standard of luxury for guests. This feature appeals to families and luxury travelers alike. These innovations highlight the constant evolution of the cruise industry, with cruise lines competing to offer better services, more entertainment, and improved sustainability. Whether through faster internet, more personalized experiences, or a reduced environmental footprint, these changes have transformed the guest experience, making cruising more appealing. 7. Smart Room Technology – Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises First Introduced On : Scarlet Lady  (2021) for Virgin Voyages, Odyssey of the Seas  (2021) for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines : Virgin Voyages, Royal Caribbean International, MSC Cruises Innovation : Virgin Voyages took innovative room technology to the next level with their tablet-based system. Passengers aboard Scarlet Lady  can use a tablet to control everything in their cabin, from lighting and room temperature to entertainment and even curtains. The technology allows for a fully customized environment accessible with a simple tap on the tablet. While MSC Cruises attempted a similar system with their Zoe  AI assistant on ships like MSC Virtuosa , it received mixed reviews due to its limited functionality and sometimes inconsistent performance. Zoe mainly provided basic information and wasn't as advanced in controlling the full cabin environment. Royal Caribbean's   Odyssey of the Seas  also introduced smart room controls that allow passengers to adjust settings such as temperature and lighting through the ship's app, making it convenient for tech-savvy travelers. Impact : Virgin Voyages' tablet technology stands out because of its seamless integration and ease of use, offering passengers complete control of their environment. This level of personalization adds to the luxurious feel of the ship and enhances travelers' comfort. Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises also contribute to the smart room revolution, although Virgin’s implementation is currently the most advanced in terms of user experience. 8. High-Tech Drone Shows – Royal Caribbean First Introduced On : Wonder of the Seas  (2022) Cruise Line : Royal Caribbean International Innovation : Royal Caribbean took onboard entertainment to new heights by incorporating drone shows  into their evening performances. Using synchronized drones that fly above the open-air AquaTheater, these shows create stunning visual effects, adding a modern and high-tech flair to traditional cruise entertainment. Drones are synchronized with live performances and lighting, enhancing the storytelling and adding a sense of awe and wonder to the experience. Impact : This innovation has raised the bar for cruise entertainment, offering a unique and memorable spectacle. High-tech drone shows captivate audiences and provide futuristic entertainment that blends technology and artistry. Over the last five years, the cruise industry has made significant progress in enhancing the onboard experience. Innovations like Royal Caribbean’s Starlink internet integration and LNG-powered ships have revolutionized the industry from internet access to entertainment and sustainability. Looking ahead, the future of cruising promises even more exciting possibilities, including greater use of artificial intelligence, expanded automation, greener technologies, and immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences. These innovations aim to make cruising more attractive to a broader audience while minimizing environmental impact. • The Best and Worst of Royal Caribbean: 3 Things They Excel At—and 3 They Don't

Royal Caribbean is widely regarded as one of the top cruise lines, known for its impressive ships and extensive range of activities. However, like any major company, it has its pros and cons. As a seasoned cruiser, I’ve experienced both the highlights and the frustrations that come with Royal Caribbean. Whether you’re planning your first voyage or you’re a loyal Crown & Anchor Society member, here are three things Royal Caribbean excels at —and three areas where it could improve. 3 Things Royal Caribbean Does Best 1. Entertainment That Stuns at Sea When it comes to onboard entertainment, Royal Caribbean truly takes the crown . The line consistently impresses with high-energy Broadway-style productions , dazzling ice-skating performances , and cutting-edge high-tech shows . Their newest ships offer thrilling experiences, like AquaTheater performances  featuring acrobatics and water stunts that leave you on the edge of your seat. On Oasis-class ships , the ice-skating shows blend artistry and skill, while Quantum-class ships  boast the SeaPlex , the largest indoor activity space at sea, complete with bumper cars , laser tag , trapeze lessons , and even roller skating . 2. Loyalty That Rewards You for Coming Back Who doesn’t love being rewarded for loyalty? Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society  makes it worthwhile to keep coming back. The loyalty program offers tiered benefits, including discounted or complimentary drinks , exclusive parties , upgraded in-room amenities , and special perks like free laundry for high-tier members . Starting at the Diamond level , you’ll even enjoy 4 free drinks per day ! Best of all, your points never expire —your loyalty status is yours for life, and you can enjoy these perks whenever you cruise. Sample perks - For all perks, go to RoyalCaribbean.com. 3. Excitement for Every Generation Royal Caribbean excels at offering activities  that appeal to all age groups, making it a fantastic choice for multi-generational travel . Whether it’s toddlers, teens, or grandparents , everyone can find something to enjoy onboard. Kids’ clubs , thrilling water slides , the FlowRider surf simulator , rock climbing walls , and serene adult-only solariums  are just a few of the activities available across the fleet. Oasis and Quantum-class ships  are equipped with these exciting features, ensuring that everyone in the family stays entertained. 3 Areas for Improvement As much as I love Royal Caribbean, no cruise line is perfect. Here are the top three things that frustrate me the most: 1. Sticker Shock from High Prices We recently compared prices in The Real Cost of a 7-Day Cruise , on a variety cruise lines and found Royal Caribbean ranked 6 out of 9 on the base fare for a 7-day interior room, falling behind MSC, Princess, Carnival, Celebrity, HAL and NCL. The high prices don't stop there. Many cruisers are unaware that Royal Caribbean also charges additional gratuities will be charged daily, which leads to unexpected costs  when they accumulate over time. Royal Caribbean should make these charges more transparent  during the booking process to avoid sticker shock , especially for new cruisers. High prices continue on to the optional add-ons, including alcohol, dining, and WiFi, which leads to the feeling on being "nickel and dimed" on board and leads to my second area of improvement. 2. Lack of an All-Inclusive Option While Royal Caribbean’s drink packages offer convenience, they come with a hefty price tag. It’s hard to find the Deluxe Beverage Package for less than $70 per person, per day, and on some sailings, prices can soar as high as $110. For couples, this can easily add up to over $1,300 for a week-long trip. Royal Caribbean's drink package is one of the MOST EXPENSIVE at sea, matched only by it's sister cruise line, Celebrity. Unlike some other cruise lines, Royal Caribbean does not offer an all-inclusive package  that combines drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and specialty dining  into one convenient price. This means that guests are faced with a la carte pricing  for everything from alcohol to onboard activities, which can make budgeting for a cruise  more challenging. Many cruisers, myself included, wish Royal Caribbean  would introduce a comprehensive package  to streamline costs. When adding in the drink package, WiFi, specialty dining, and tips, Royal Caribbean drops to 8th out of 9, with only Disney Cruise Line pricing higher. Meanwhile, cruise lines with an all-inclusive option hold 3 of the top 4 places. If you want the drink package, you might want to check out Princess's Princess Plus & Princess Premier packages, HAL's "Have It All" Early Booking Bonus and NCL's Free at Sea and Free at Sea Plus programs before making your final decisions. Practical Tip : Before you book, look for pre-cruise deals  on packages like drinks and Wi-Fi. Booking these early can save you a significant amount of money. 3. Free Dining Can Be a Gamble The free dining options —such as the buffet and main dining room—can be hit or miss . While Sorrento’s pizza  is usually reliable, the quality of food in the main dining room  can sometimes be inconsistent. Nothing’s more disappointing  than ordering a meal in the main dining room, only to feel like you could have grabbed the same plate from the buffet. This inconsistency is frustrating, especially when it varies between ships in the same class. Set Sail with Confidence! With Royal Caribbean’s unmatched entertainment , rewarding loyalty perks , and endless activities , you’re sure to find your perfect adventure at sea. However, be mindful of the additional costs like gratuities and drink packages, and plan ahead  to make the most of your cruise. Whether you’re new to cruising or a seasoned traveler, Royal Caribbean  offers something for everyone—but being prepared will ensure your journey is smooth sailing! • The Best Travel Apps You’re Not Using (But Should Be)

In today’s fast-paced world, planning your travels has never been easier—or more overwhelming. Whether booking a spontaneous trip, mapping out a road trip, or exploring a new city, there’s an app for everything. But are you using the best ones? While we all tend to stick to what we know, some underrated apps can completely change your travel game. These apps are designed to work seamlessly wherever you are, ensuring that no matter the destination, you’re just a few taps away from an epic, stress-free adventure. Navigation & Transit Waze (Best for Driving) App Store Links : Apple App Store , Google Play Store Apps You Should Ditch : Apple Maps, MapQuest, Here WeGo Why It’s the Best : Waze stands out from Apple Maps by leveraging its real-time , community-powered updates to provide users with hyper-localized information on traffic, hazards, and speed traps, ensuring a more dynamic and responsive navigation experience. Compared to Google Maps, Waze excels in its proactive approach to rerouting , utilizing hyper-local data and interactive user reports to keep drivers informed and engaged, offering a truly customizable and time-saving journey. Unique Features : Waze’s ability to provide instant updates  on road hazards, as well as Spotify integration for seamless in-app music control, makes it an outstanding app for drivers. Google Maps (Best for Walking/Navigating a City) App Store Links : Apple App Store , Google Play Store Apps You Should Ditch : MapQuest, Apple Maps, HERE WeGo Why It’s the Best : When it comes to navigating a city on foot, Google Maps shines by delivering highly accurate walking routes, robust public transit options, and real-time updates that keep you informed at every turn. Unlike MapQuest, which falls short with limited public transit data and less precise directions, Google Maps ensures you have the best route and transit info at your fingertips. Plus, Google Maps takes the lead over Apple Maps and HERE WeGo by offering rich business details , such as user reviews , ratings , and nearby attractions, while its Street View feature gives you a visual of your surroundings, making urban navigation a breeze and more intuitive. Unique Features : With features like offline maps , indoor maps for large buildings, and integration with local businesses, Google Maps is indispensable for urban navigation. Flight & Travel Planning Skyscanner (Best Flight App) App Store Links : Apple App Store , Google Play Store Apps You Should Ditch : Kayak, Hopper, Momondo Why It’s the Best : Skyscanner stands out  over Hopper, Kayak, and Momondo for booking flights thanks to its comprehensive global search  capabilities, which pull deals from a wide variety of airlines and travel agencies. Unlike Hopper, which is great for price predictions but more limited in scope, Skyscanner offers flexible date searches  and intuitive filtering options , allowing users to easily refine their search by flight duration, stops, and airlines. With a user-friendly interface  and broader results  than Kayak and Momondo, Skyscanner ensures a smoother, more efficient  experience for travelers looking to secure the best flights with ease. Unique Features : The “Everywhere” search  lets you explore destinations based on your budget, making it ideal for spontaneous travelers. Skyscanner also offers price alerts and fare tracking. Rome2Rio (Best for Multi-Modal Travel Planning) App Store Links : Apple App Store , Google Play Store Apps You Should Ditch : All Apps that only have one mode of transportation for travel planning. Why It’s the Best : Rome2Rio shines  as the ultimate app for multi-modal travel planning, offering a comprehensive overview  of transportation options that let you seamlessly compare flights, trains, buses, ferries, and car rentals—all in one place. It excels  in delivering cost comparisons and estimated travel times, giving you a clear, actionable view  of the fastest and most budget-friendly routes available. Unlike other apps, Rome2Rio’s integration with booking platforms  means you can book tickets directly, streamlining your entire travel planning process  across multiple modes of transportation with ease Unique Features : The ability to compare all transportation options— flights, trains, buses, ferries —with estimated costs and times, makes Rome2Rio a go-to for international travel planning. Communication & Language WhatsApp (Best for Messaging While Traveling) App Store Links : Apple App Store , Google Play Store Apps You Should Ditch : Telegram, Facebook Messenger, iMessage/Samsung’s Messages/Google Messages Why It’s the Best : What makes WhatsApp a top choice for travelers is its global reach , ensuring you stay connected with international contacts in regions where apps like Telegram aren't widely used. Its end-to-end encryption by default  provides a higher level of privacy compared to Facebook Messenger or many built-in messaging apps. Unlike Apple’s iMessage and Samsung’s Messages, which are platform-specific  and only work seamlessly between their own devices, WhatsApp’s cross-platform compatibility  allows you to communicate freely with anyone, no matter what phone they use. Unique Features : It also offers location and document sharing , making it perfect for organizing meet-ups with friends while traveling.
